Glasgow Life

I've been in Glasgow a while now so thought I would share my favourite places.

Byers Road

In the West End is amazing! At the top it leads on to Great Western Road and at the bottom Dumbarton Road. It's full of vintage shops (including the one I got my red dress from for my Uncle's wedding), bars, restaurants, cafe's, greengrocers, 3 Oxfam shops, a record shop, library and much more. It's pretty much a High Street that actually functions as a High Street and it does so whilst having a Waitrose and an M&S Food on it. There is overwhelming choice of places to go and it takes a few visits to get to know. Some particular gems are:

Cup - A fantastic modern tea shop that serves many different types of tea with matching cup cakes. I come from North Yorkshire and have always loved to visit Betties (v.famous tea room in York, Harrogate & Northallerton) and I have finally found a place that rivals it. Their afternoon tea is gorgeous and a really good way to spend an afternoon. The staff are always friendly and they have wifi. It's often very busy so go early and spend a while sampling the cakes. The strawberry and vanilla one comes with a shot glass of fresh strawberries and is perfect with Earl Grey tea.

The Blind Pig - I've gone here a few times for lunch and dinner. It's a very cool venue and is based on the speakeasies in the 1920s. The decor is dark and dramatic & they play old movies all day/night. They also do an afternoon tea but with a twist. Instead of tea in your teapot there is martini.

Oxfam book shop - I know I'm biased... but.. they have a big stock of cheap books and I love to read.

Ruthven Lane - is between the Oxfam clothes shop and Subway. Head down it and you will find Starry Starry Night which have some amazing vintage clothes (many I'm sure must be used by theatres for costumes) and fantastic broaches. If you go past there you'll reach a little precinct that has an antique shop and some more vintage shops including Circa Vintage which is definitely worth a look.

The Grosvenor Cafe - has a Cinema, 2 bars, a cafe & a restaurant. They serve very good cosmopolitans.

Elsewhere in Glasgow

The Liquid Ship  is a favourite of mine. In the winter they serve mulled wine, hot toddies and alcoholic hot chocolate. They have live music most nights and they always seem to be busy - but not so loud that you have to shout at the person you're with. They have a good menu and their platters are v.good. I like to make my own with cheeses, olives and cured ham but they have a wide selection of ones to choose from.

King Tuts Wah Wah Hut Oasis were discovered there and many of the big name bands today played there. They have gigs most nights and serve food during the day & in the evening. It's a cool, friendly bar and they even have their own lager.

Knitting

Knit 'n' Stitch

The Life Craft A friendly cafe on Great Western Road with a knitting club and classes. They also teach sewing and you can hire a sewing machine for £5. There cakes are amazing and the staff are lovely.

Glasgow Craft Mafia A really cool website with blogs and links to crafty businesses around Glasgow.
